Selling My PS4: What to Check Before Handing It Over
Before selling your PS4, identify the console, check its condition and protect your saved data and account. An original PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro are different devices, and accessories or faults also matter. A clear description helps a buyer assess the actual package you want to sell.
Identify the console and installed storage
Record whether you have an original PS4, Slim or Pro, its model code and installed storage capacity. Sony's identification guide shows where to find the model number on each type. The CUH model code is more useful than describing everything as a PS4.
Tell the buyer about any storage replacement or previous repair. Keep purchase information and the serial number available for ownership enquiries, but avoid publishing private account information. You can provide known details without guessing an unknown capacity.
Check the console and included accessories
If it works normally, check that the console starts, displays through HDMI and reads a disc if applicable. Note shutdowns, excessive fan noise, damaged ports or a disc that will not eject. Describe when intermittent problems occur and any repair attempts.
List the number and type of controllers, power cable, HDMI cable and any physical games included. Check controller charging, buttons, sticks and connection. A working console with a faulty controller is a different package from a complete working set. Be clear about missing items.
Back up saves and other data first
Before changing the console, follow Sony's transfer or disposal guide. Back up saved data and captures you want to keep, and sync trophies. Confirm that your chosen backup or transfer is complete before erasing anything.
Remove discs and USB devices that are not part of the sale. Keep your PlayStation account and access details private. Describe the physical games being included separately from anything available through your own account.
Deactivate and initialise using Sony's instructions
Sony's deactivation guide directs PS4 owners to Account Management in Settings, then the primary PS4 activation option to deactivate. Deactivation and data removal are separate parts of preparing the system.
Once your backup is checked, Sony's disposal guide directs you to Initialisation in Settings and the Full option when initialising the PS4. This deletes stored information and cannot be undone. If the console cannot start, tell the buyer that data preparation is unresolved before agreeing a handover.
