How to delete data from iPhone storage safely

Review what is using the phone's storage

Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Review the largest apps and the recommendations, reading each explanation before enabling it. Apple's storage guide explains what the categories include and how to inspect individual applications.

Phone storage and iCloud storage are separate capacities. Deleting a cloud backup is not a sensible first response to a large app on the handset. Identify the actual category taking space and check whether its contents can be downloaded again or exist only locally.

Distinguish offloading an app from deleting it

In an app's storage details, offloading removes the application while retaining its documents and data. Deleting the app removes it and its associated data from the device. Apple explains both options in the storage guide; some apps also provide their own content-management controls.

Before deleting, check the app's backup, export or synchronisation method. Keep files you cannot reproduce and confirm that you can sign in again if needed. Do not assume that every game's progress, downloaded document or local recording will return merely because the app can be reinstalled.

Be careful with photos, messages and cloud files

When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting an image affects the synced library on other connected devices. Apple's photo guide explains that behaviour and the Recently Deleted collection. Keep independently verified copies before permanently deleting items.

It uses cloud originals and smaller local versions where appropriate, subject to sufficient iCloud space. Do not confuse it with deleting photographs you want to retain.

Check a file's location before removing it

Review whether a document is in local phone storage, iCloud Drive or another provider. Apple's iCloud storage guidance makes clear that deleting an iCloud Drive file can remove it across devices. Keep a separate copy first if it matters.

For downloaded media, use the relevant application's supported controls and read whether the action removes a download or the underlying item. System and cache categories do not all offer manual deletion. Avoid promises from unfamiliar cleaner apps that they will safely remove every unexplained storage category.
